Independent Research Initiative

Uncovering the Forgotten.

Informing the Future.

The Unclaimed Lives Research Initiative is an independent, public-interest academic research project studying unclaimed human remains in the State of Florida — examining who goes unclaimed, why, and what it reveals about social isolation, poverty, and public policy.

What We Study

Every year, thousands of individuals die in Florida without anyone to claim their remains. These are not anonymous deaths — most of these individuals are identified by name. Yet no family member, friend, or institution steps forward to arrange their final disposition. They are buried in county indigent burial programs, cremated at public expense, or held indefinitely in medical examiner facilities.

The Unclaimed Lives Research Initiative exists to study this phenomenon systematically. Through rigorous analysis of public records, demographic data, and county-level disposition practices, we seek to understand who goes unclaimed, identify the social and structural factors that contribute to this outcome, and provide evidence-based recommendations for policymakers, public health officials, and community organizations.

There Is a Critical Gap in Florida's Public Records

Most public attention focuses on unidentified remains — individuals whose identity is unknown. But a far larger and less visible population exists: unclaimed remains, where the individual is identified but no one comes forward.

Unidentified Remains

  • • Identity is unknown
  • • Receives significant law enforcement attention
  • • National databases exist (NamUs, NCIC)
  • • Relatively small number of cases

Unclaimed Remains

  • • Identity is known — name on record
  • • Receives little public attention or resources
  • • No statewide tracking system exists
  • • Thousands of cases annually in Florida

Our Research Focus

Demographic Analysis

Examining age, race, gender, and socioeconomic characteristics of unclaimed decedents to identify patterns and disparities.

Geographic Patterns

Mapping the distribution of unclaimed remains across Florida's 67 counties to reveal regional variations and urban-rural divides.

Socioeconomic Factors

Social Isolation & Mortality

Exploring how social disconnection contributes to individuals dying without anyone to claim their remains.

Policy & Public Health

Evaluating existing policies and proposing evidence-based recommendations for improved indigent burial systems.

"Understanding who goes unclaimed — and why — is the first step toward building systems that don't leave people behind."
